Tangent Plane Idea In this short, we briefly visualize the tangent plane to a surface in 3D space. The idea is to find the tangent lines in the x-direction and the y-direction (holding y constant and x constant, respectively) and then use the two lines to find the plane spanned by those lines. The tangent plane approximates the surface locally so that all smooth surfaces look like a flat space if you zoom in far enough.
