Your blood flowing. Light microscopy footage of blood cells flowing through capillaries in human tissue. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels, only a few micrometres across, just large enough for the passage of red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to body tissues and carry away carbon dioxide (the waste product of respiration). This captivating experiment demonstrates capillary action. The paper towels are made of fibres, which, due to their nature, can pull water upward, against the force of gravity. As the coloured water travels through the fibres, it moves from one cup to another, leading to a delightful mix of colours in the middle.
