The Siberian flying squirrel is the only species of flying squirrel found in Europe. Once widespread, this species is now considered vulnerable within the European Union where it is found in only three countries. Forestry and logging are the major threats as flying squirrels are reluctant to cross open areas on the ground. Managed forests also tend to have fewer deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves in the fall) and less decaying wood and tree holes - all things that the flying squirrel
