The Panzer IV was the most numerous German built tank of the Second World War. The Tank Museum’s example – shown here - was built as one of 229 Ausf D models between October 1939 and May 1941. It was then steadily upgraded, receiving the long KwK 40 gun, extra armour on the hull and Schurzen spaced armour on the turret. Although the vehicle’s early history is unknown, it was later used as a driver training tank by the Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahrerkorps (NSKK) before being captured. | The T

During the summer of 1943 the Germans were in retreat and sending tanks back to Berlin was not a good option.
