They're costing £1.6 billion and today the first new train of the biggest ever order placed in this country was unveiled. The 1,100 new carriages will transform the journey to work for millions of Thameslink passengers on the country's most overcrowded services. The trains will start carrying passengers next Spring, releasing older trains to work in the Thames Valley. The story behind Victorian London’s ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’… London had the first tunnel in the world underneath a navigable river and many pass through it everyday without realising. Designed by Marc Brunel (the father of the much better known Isambard Kingdom Brunel), the Thames Tunnel was constructed from 1825-1843.
